What's Wrong with Working from Home? Would You if You Could?

Now Best Buy has joined Yahoo! in banning employees from working from home.

Here at Patch, there is no "here." We all work from home. Or from coffee shops, public libraries, patios, porches and dining rooms—anywhere we can get a wi-fi signal. It keeps us nimble, keeps costs down and let's us work out in the world with the people in the communities we cover. It's a great gig. And not to gloat...but I was in the warmth of my home office working while some of you were fighting traffic during the recent snowstorms. But it's obviously not for everyone. Some people prefer the office environment, the regular interaction face-to-face with coworkers. And in the case of Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!, she wasn't having it anymore. Unless Yahoo has sworn off hiring Indian developers, then Yahoo still does not have all its workers together in the office. Maybe this is an argument against off-shoring and for hiring all American workers who can all be in the office together.   more ›

Crestwood Strip Mall Space Seeking the Right Tenant

Crestwood Commons, which houses Gordman's and Best Buy, has another 50,000 sq. ft. still available for lease.

A strip mall space across from Crestwood Court is officially back on the leasing market. Crestwood Commons, 9440-9490 Watson Rd., has 58,000 sq. ft. available on the west side of the building, which is adjacent to Schnucks. The space can be divided into 15-25,000 sq. ft. portions, said Jeff Eisenberg, who is marketing the space. Best Buy and Gordmans are the current anchoring tenants. Eisenberg said the space has been vacant for some time because a couple interested tenants fell through. However, he believes its proximity to the grocery store has made it an attractive amenity to businesses looking for repeat traffic. He's also been reluctant to bring in a temporary tenant, like a holiday store, in hopes that someone with more permanent …

Where to Find a Nintendo Wii U in South County

The next-generation gaming console is on sale, but shortages are expected for those without pre-orders.

It's release day for the latest gaming console from Nintendo and only the quick or those with pre-orders are likely to find one in stores today.  (For instant updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) The Nintendo Wii U debuts at $300 and likely to be one of the most sought-after items of the holiday season with the company hoping to move 3.5 million units this year. However, national media is reporting that shoppers who haven't pre-ordered can expect day-one shortages.  (Read Related Story: Walmart Holding Its Earliest Black Friday Ever) Locally, representatives from some locations of Target, Walmart and Best Buy said they would have some Wii U's on hand for those who didn't pre-order, but expected them to sell out quickly. "I would …

50 Best Buy Stores on the Chopping Block in 2013

Is the Watson Road store in danger of closing?

Best Buy announced Thursday that it will close 50 big box stores in the United States in an effort to improve its bottom line. CEO Brian Dunn said in a press release that as the consumer electronics industry evolves, the company is taking “major actions” to improve its operating performance. The company hopes its new multi-channel strategy will strengthen its portfolio of store formats. The strategy includes “closing some big box stores, modifying others to our enhanced Connected Store format, and adding Best Buy Mobile stand-alone locations,” Dunn said, noting that the company’s goal is to improve the shopping environment, increase its points of presence and improve performance, in addition to increasing profits. He added that the coming …

We got in and out with all of our video games in about 1 hour. We got some great deals and little hassle with long lines this year. Of course we avoided the big box stores. Once we left the mall and went to McDonald's it was a different story.   more ›
