Retired Teacher Turns Favorite Lesson into Children’s Book

A former Lindbergh kindergarten teacher always taught her class to pick up worms after it rains.

One of Doss Margiotta favorite lessons for her kindergarten students was the importance of worms  and how to rescue them from driveways and sidewalks after a rain. “I’d tell kids that I pick up worms from the driveway and put them in the garden,” Margiotta said. She said that worms like to travel above ground during rain storms, but often get stranded on concrete surfaces, unable to return to the dirt before the sun bakes them. “The book was always in my head, but I didn’t have time to do it,” she said. She wrote “Molly Green Loves Worms” after she retired from teaching in 2008. Margiotta said she loved teaching at Lindbergh and was reluctant to retire, but she spend more time with her mother who was in poor health. She joked that it was …

Mall Museum Turns Over Space to Book 'Experiences'

Favorite Mary Engelbreit's Christmas storybook land opens through Jan. 10 at Children's Illustrated Art Museum in Crestwood mall and other artists sign new books.

Between assembling faux Christmas trees and arranging props for the Mary Engelbreit Christmas storybook exhibit, museum owner Jeanne Johnston realized copies of illustrator Richard Bernal's latest children's book had yet to arrive for the next day's book signing. Just as she starts to worry, Bernal strolls into the Children's Illustrated Art Museum, closely followed by his publisher, Josh Stevens, who is wheeling two boxes full of Brother Jerome and the Angels in the Bakery. Warm hellos are exchanged as everyone waits for Stevens to cut through the packing tape and pull out a hot-off-the-press book. Johnston is all smiles as she flips through, running her hand over the pages until she pauses and says, "See, this picture is right here." She…
