A Mackenzie woman told Shrewsbury Police that $750 was charged to her credit card after a visit to Crestwood Schnucks. On Friday, April 12, Shrewsbury Police investigated the fraudulent use of a credit device for a resident in the 7000 block of Rhodes Avenue, according to Shrewsbury Police reports. The victim told police that she used her card at a Schnucks store in Crestwood and there were eight charges on her card on Thursday, April 11, with $750 of merchandise purchased at retail stores in Pennsylvania. The woman had not traveled to Pennsylvania. The Crestwood store was one of more than 50 St. Louis stores affected by a recent security breach. Monday morning, Schnucks released its list of St. Louis area stores that were impacted by the recent security breach. As a result of that breach, Schnucks customers across the St. Louis area have found fraudulent charges on their debit and cards. The Schnucks stores on the list (which can be found in the PDF portion of this article along with a timeline issued by Schnucks) are located in a number of Patches throughout St. Louis, St. Charles and surrounding counties. The grocer said the issue with card purchases has been "found and contained." The company said it is working with law enforcement agencies and the Missouri Attorney General's office moving forward.
Schnucks announced early Saturday morning that a "very intense" investigation has revealed that the grocery store chain was the victim of a cyberattack and the problem was "found and contained," according to a company statement. "We have identified the issue and taken comprehensive measures to contain the incident. We are cooperating with law enforcement, the Missouri Attorney General’s Office, and the credit card companies to determine the scope and magnitude of this crime and apprehend those individuals making fraudulent purchases, Schnucks CEO Scott Schnuck said in the statement. The Secret Service is not yet officially involved in an investigation, but has advice for worried St. Louis County consumers.
Authorities from jurisdictions around the St. Louis area are confirming reports in recent days that Schnucks, the Maryland Heights-based grocery chain, may have had its credit card collection system compromised, making consumers vulnerable to identity theft. Creve Coeur Police and the St. Louis County Police are some of the agencies which have taken reports. The St. Louis County Wildwood Precinct posted an alert on its Facebook page Wednesday stating the department has taken numerous reports for fraudulent use of a credit device. A man used a fake credit card to buy $4,182 worth of stereo equipment from stores in Manchester and South County, Manchester Police said. Erskine Yarbrough, of the 300 block of Fillmore Street in South St. Louis, was charged Monday with two counts of felony stealing. St. Louis County Police said Yarbrough bought a DVD receiver, two subwoofers and other stereo equipment from the South County Audio Express, 5616 South Lindbergh, in the Concord area, with a fraudulent prepaid credit card on Aug. 20. The equipment was valued at $2,180. Manchester Police said Yarbrough then used the same card on Aug. 21 to get $2,003 in stereo …
