Crestwood’s First Woman Firefighter Hangs Up Her Boots after 25 Years

Nancy Willison's retirement in January means an all-male fire service for the first time since 1985.

Crestwood's first woman firefighter hangs up her boots for the last time after 25 years with the city's Department of Fire Services when she retires in January. Nancy Willison, 55, was hired May 1985 and thus won her spot in Crestwood history. Crestwood's fire service had one other female firefighter in recent memory, but she no longer works for the city, according to city officials. "My parents were my role models," Willison said near the eve of her retirement. "They taught (me) the difference between right and wrong." She wishes her parents were still around to see her finish what she started 25 years earlier. "I was a little nervous about being the first female firefighter," Willison said recently.
