Student Speakers to Take Center Stage at Local High School Commencements

Several high schools are using the Chaifetz Arena as a commencement venue, Others will keep the graduation event at home.

There are no major speakers on the high school commencement circuit this year, unlike two years ago when Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon addressed graduates at Northwest High School's graduation ceremony. Instead, local students will be taking center stage, addressing their colleagues during the commencment ceremony. Lindbergh High School has set 7 p.m. May 28 for commencement at the Chaifetz Arena on the St. Louis University campus at 1 S. Compton Ave., St. Louis. Students Vidhan Srivastava and Azra Sadikovic will address their peers. Rockwood Summit High School will send its graduates onto college or careers at a commencement ceremony May 23, also at the Chaifetz Arena. The student speakers will include Chris Beck, Brianna Biffignani, Brian Ball…

Chaifetz Arena...may as well call it the "No Convenient Parking Arena" I super dislike having to go there. For anything. Would much rather drive to St. Charles and the Family Arena.   more ›

Survival Guide for New High School Freshmen (and Their Parents)

"Patch" offers tips and ideas for teens and parents as they prepare for the first day of high school.

If your teen is gearing up to start his or her freshman year in high school, you’ll be glad to know that while you're both in for some big changes, you will both survive--and ideally, you'll be better for it in the end. Last year, when my oldest son started his high school journey, I was afraid that he’d be too overwhelmed by the maze of hallways on the school's large campus, the variety and location of his classes and the mix of older, adult-sized students he’d be dealing with each day. The good news is that we’ve both survived this far, and so will you. Here are a few tips I learned along the way that might make that transition a little easier for all involved. How Does Lindbergh Stack Up Technologically?

Lindbergh High School isn't the only laptop-friendly school among nine looked at here.

Upgrade by upgrade, both public and private schools in our area appear to work hard to improve technology resources for their students. Different schools take different approaches toward the adoption of wireless networks, laptop rentals and smart boards in classrooms. But one thing became evident in looking at 10 schools in the area. A mere computer lab doesn't seem to cut it anymore—quite unlike a decade ago. Remaining competitive in today's school-tech game likely requires a whole lot more. School districts such as Lindbergh, Rockwood and Ladue allow students to bring their own computers to school. There are no school computers for students to take home. Both Parkway and Kirkwood schools hope to enable access for students' personal …

'Bandwich' Sales Send Lindbergh Marching Band to Rose Parade Performance New Year's Day

Booster parent: A giant $6 sub sandwich proves to be the most effective fundraiser for the high school musicians' $400,000 trip to Pasadena.

The pre-dawn quiet of a South County morning is broken by the sounds of drums, brass and woodwinds as the Lindbergh High School Spirit of St. Louis Marching Band rehearses for California's Rose Parade on New Year's Day. This is the second year that parade officials invited Lindbergh to perform. The first was 2005. Just 15 bands are selected worldwide to march in the Rose Parade. Band members call the early morning workout "zero hour," describing the time they put in before first period of the regular school day. In a little more than three weeks, the band is scheduled to play at two high-profile events: the field show for the St. Louis Rams' Dec. 19 football game against Kansas City at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis and the 2011 Rose…
