In a game of teams and coaches that know each other well, this one went to the Flyers.
Lindbergh senior Mik Ebert didn’t have a break the entire game against Fox. Flyers coach Jason Wolfard picked Ebert as one guy that made a difference in Lindbergh’s first-round districts win over Fox. “He made some big plays, some steals, and1s, things like that,” Wolfard said. “At points that I thought we could have lost the lead a little bit, he came up with the big play or the big steal.” The point spread was hardly over five the entire game, and in the end, down to two. Lindbergh stayed ahead of district host, Fox 52-50 at the final bell, to advance to the district semifinal game against Kirkwood. Fox’s season ended at 5-20. Lindbergh stands at 8-9. “We played hard, got the shots we wanted, got the looks we wanted,” Fox head coach …

Tiger seniors hit three's to start, and free throws to ice it at the end.
Oakville’s seniors were money on senior night at home against Lindbergh in the final Suburban West Conference regular season game for both teams. Senior Austin Cibulka got things going with two 3-pointers, and senior Alec McChesney hit from the foul line to ice it. In the end, Oakville out-paced Lindbergh 48-42. Lindbergh ends the regular season at 4-4, (12-13 in Suburban West Conference). Oakville finishes at 5-3, (8-17 in conference). “Our seniors came out and set the tone early,” Oakville coach Nick Traxler said. “They had a great first five minutes of the game, and everybody was pumped up from there.” The score was 16-14 after the first quarter. The second period was almost even. The Tigers 6-foot-10 sophomore Austin Gillman hit for …

Eureka makes eight 3-pointers and wins at Lindbergh, 51-38. The Flyers have struggled in recent weeks.
Lindbergh coach Jason Wolfard warned his players that Eureka was a good 3-point shooting team. On Tuesday night, his Flyers found out for themselves. Eureka hit eight 3-pointers and held off a late Lindbergh run to down the Flyers, 51-38, in front a small crowd at Lindbergh High School. It was Lindbergh's fourth loss in five games. (Sports editor's update: Lindbergh won at Lutheran South, 63-57, on Wednesday to go to 9-9.) The Flyers in turn went 0-for-10 from behind the arc, getting outscored 24-0 on 3-pointers. Down by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, Lindbergh rallied to cut the deficit to three at 39-36 early in the fourth quarter but was outscored 12-2 down the stretch to lose for the eighth time in their past 11 games. “We …

Kirkwood plays good defense late in the game, and withstands the Flyers' final flurry to win, 54-53.
In a back-and-forth, tight game the Kirkwood Pioneers boys basketball team hung on for a 54-53 win over the Lindbergh Flyers on Friday night. Down by one point in the final seconds, Lindbergh senior guard Will Spitzfaden stole Kirkwood’s inbound pass, but missed an inside shot, and then junior guard Joe Killian’s follow-up shot also missed as time expired. “The guys kept fighting,” Lindbergh coach Jason Wolford said. “Gave themselves a chance to win it.” Kirkwood’s big road win puts them at 9-9 overall, and Lindbergh falls to 7-8. “We got the steal and it looked like we were going to pull it off,” Lindbergh senior center Jared Haenni said, “We did our best, and they played some good D at the end.” Kirkwood came up with big defensive plays …

Vianney and Lindbergh renew their intense rivalry on Friday night, and Vianney hangs on to win, 78-67.
Don’t try telling Vianney and Lindbergh high schools that the boys basketball District Tournament is still one month away. The rivals had another back-and-forth battle on Friday night as St. John Vianney overcame a late Lindbergh run and held off the Flyers for a 78-67 win in front of a packed and energetic crowd at Lindbergh High School in what could be a preview of next month's district final. Trailing by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, Lindbergh (5-5) cut the deficit to three at 67-64 with 1:15 to play. But Vianney (8-7) hit their free throws and the Flyers were called for a key charging foul with 57 seconds remaining and the Golden Griffins held on for a thrilling win over their rival. “What a great atmosphere,” said Vianney…

Marquette substitutes for all five of its starters and the following 30-7 run led the Mustangs to an improbable 54-44 come-from-behind win over Lindbergh at home.
After watching Lindbergh score the first eight points of the third quarter to build a nine-point lead Thursday night, Marquette coach Shane Matzen called timeout and subbed in five guys off his bench to send a wakeup call to his starters. Not even he could have predicted what happened next. Marquette’s substitutes followed with a 30-7 run to take control of the game and lead them to a 54-44 come-from-behind win over Lindbergh at Marquette High School. “We went from maybe one of the poorest three minutes I’ve seen in my 15 years here to maybe the best four minutes I’ve ever seen,” Matzen said. “It was really hard to comprehend to tell you the truth. All of a sudden it just turned around. “I think Lindbergh is an awfully quality opponent. I’…

The 15th-seeded Flyers pushed No. 2 seed CBC, but lost, 67-54, at the Meramec Holiday Festival Tournament.
Had seeding for the Meramec Holiday Festival Tournament not been done the first week of the season, the Lindbergh Flyers would have been much higher than the No. 15 seed in the 16-team tournament. They showed why on Tuesday night. Entering the tournament with just one loss on the season, the Flyers led the No. 2-seed CBC Cadets by five points at halftime, and gave them a scare for much of the night before fading in the second half and losing, 67-54, at Meramec. Lindbergh (5-2) made a valiant attempt to be the first No. 15 seed to beat a No. 2 seed in the tournament's 33-year history, but couldn't overcome 25 points each from CBC's Darion Rackley and Seth Jackson. The Flyers led by as many as nine points in the first quarter and held leads…

The Flyers cruised after a very strong first half, and rolled to their fourth-straight win, 59-34 over Parkway Central on Tuesday night.
With his team leading 29-15 at halftime, Lindbergh boys basketball coach Jason Wolfard went into the locker room unsure what to say negatively to his team. He couldn't get mad at the shooting after they went 6-for-7 from behind the 3-point line. He couldn't be upset with how they took care of the ball after they committed just six turnovers. And he surely couldn't find fault with a stifling defense that allowed Parkway Central just two points in the second quarter. "We went in there at halftime and tried to find something we could get on them for to do better," Wolfard joked. "We got on them for offensive rebounds but couldn't really get on them too much for that because we shot the ball so well and didn't have many opportunities." The …

Lindbergh wins the 55th annual Gene Steighorst Tournament with a 67-60 win over host Hillsboro at Hillsboro High School.
HILLSBORO – A year ago, even an optimistic Jason Wolfard--head coach for Lindbergh High School boys basketball--did not imagine he would have a chance to see what he did Saturday night. Still holding the plaque in his hand, Wolfard took a few minutes to talk about winning the 55th annual Gene Steighorst Tournament with a 67-60 win over host Hillsboro at Hillsboro High School. "I'm just so proud of the guys and what they did," Wolfard said. "To figure out what it takes and be a part of a winning team and winning a tournament, it just shows how hard they worked and what they put into it." Making the championship that much more remarkable is the fact that the Flyers went 5-20 last season and 1-25 the year before that. The Flyers knocked …

After winning just six games the past two seasons, Lindbergh basketball head coach Jason Wolfard expects the Flyers to be much more competitive this season.
The good news? Lindbergh head coach Jason Wolfard returns 76.1 percent of his scoring and 77.7 percent of his rebounding from last year's team. The bad? The Flyers won just five games and averaged 39.4 points per game. But with four starters and 11 lettermen returning from a group that went 5-20 one year ago, Wolfard and the veteran Flyers are expecting much better results this season. "It's going to be different this year. I think we're kind of the unknown right now because of the way we were the last two years," Wolfard said. "We want to compete with every team. Our goal is compete for championships whether they are tournament championships, conference championships or district championships. "We want to put ourselves in that position, …
