Ursuline Academy scores early and hangs on to 1-0 lead in the Class 3 state quarterfinals, at Oakville Sunday.
OAKVILLE—Goalie Nina Tzianos did all she could Saturday morning to keep the Lindbergh girls soccer team in the game. But in the end, it was an early goal by Ursuline Academy that stood as the Bears advanced to the Class 3 state semifinals with a 1-0 victory at Oakville High. Lindbergh Coach Mark Giesing said the first two minutes of Saturday’s match were the most critical. The Flyers (20-7) took the kickoff and went right to the Ursuline zone. While they pressed the Bears' defense, the Flyers never got a shot off as the Bears cleared the ball. That transitioned into a scoring opportunity less than a minute later, leading to Bridget Brotherton’s goal. “Two plays on either end maybe make the game,” Giesing said. Thinking the ball was going …

Mackenzie Giegling’s goal in the second overtime gives the Flyers a 3-2 victory over Summit in the Class 3 District 2 title game.
A freshman came through with a winning goal for the Lindbergh Flyers—on a girls soccer team led by seniors. Mackenzie Giegling’s goal in the second overtime of Friday night’s Class 3 District 2 championship match at Oakville High gave the Flyers a 3-2 victory over Rockwood Summit. “I just wanted to scream my heart out,” Giegling said of her feelings after her shot bounced over Summit goalkeeper Kylie Lawrence and into the right corner of the net. “It was awesome for me to experience this as just a freshman.” The final score was Lindbergh 3, Rockwood Summit 2 in two overtimes. Lindbergh (19-6) advances to play Northwest in House Springs on Tuesday. Scoring: Shots: Records: (Story continues here) The fourth-seeded Flyers advanced to the …

Junior Annie Schwartz's first half putback is just enough in the Flyers' 1-0 win over Kirkwood.
To say that Lindbergh coach Mark Giesing was relieved that his Flyers finally won a game, a 1-0 decision over Kirkwood on Wednesday, would be a bit of an understatement. The victory ended a four-game losing streak. Giesing was so excited he high-fived nearly every member of the team, and emphatically shook hands with his assistant coaches, both game officials, and just about anybody else that came his way when the game was over. “I am happy,” Giesing said. “Because we got back to what works for us, which is a possession-style of soccer. The girls really moved the ball around well, particularly in the first half when we got the goal.” Actually, Lindbergh possessed the ball for most of the night, and didn’t allow Kirkwood many chances at all…

Lindbergh can't hang on to a 2-0 lead, and falls 3-2 to Lafayette for the Flyers' fourth straight defeat.
Everyone dislikes seeing a game determined by a referee's call. But according to Lindbergh coach Mark Giesing, it wasn't the call, or the resulting penalty kick and goal, which ultimately cost his Flyers on Tuesday night. It was the Flyers’ reaction to that goal, Giesing said, that hurt his team the most in Lindbergh’s 3-2 home loss against Lafayette. Lindbergh was up 2-0 in the Suburban West Conference contest. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Lindbergh junior Rachel Marchi collided spectacularly with Lafayette junior Danielle Tolmais at the top of Lindbergh's box. The call went Lafayette's way, and sophomore Angela Black popped in the penalty kick. The goal seemed to take the life out of the Flyers, who went on to lose their final …

Roundup: Lindbergh is not out of the conference title hunt, although the Flyers’ hopes were hurt by a 5-4 loss to Fox.
An unbeaten record at this point of the high school baseball season is indeed a rarity. Parkway South has yet to taste defeat in 2011, after winning a pair of tight games over Lafayette last week. But Lindbergh is not out of the picture for a conference title, although the Flyers’ were hurt by a 5-4 loss to Fox last Wednesday. That snapped a seven-game Lindbergh winning streak. The seventh win for the Flyers was last Tuesday in a 10-0 win over Fox as Jordan Harmon and Conor Irwin combined for a two-hitter while Kendall Helbert had a home run and drove in five runs to pace the offense. Lindbergh is 6-2 in the league and 10-4 overall. The Parkway South Patriots were coming off of a sweep of Mehlville over the weekend to stay undefeated. …

Lindbergh girls soccer Webster 2-0 and wins the Webster-Kirkwood Classic.
The Lindbergh High School girls soccer team is done flying under the radar. The Flyers used goals from senior Abby Rossi and junior Katie Campbell to knock off Webster Groves 2-0 on Saturday night in the championship game of the Webster-Kirkwood Classic at Kirkwood High School. Lindbergh improved to 9-1 after winning its seventh consecutive match. The Flyers have quietly built a solid state-contending squad that features pinpoint ball control and a fundamentally strong defense. Now, thanks to the current string of successes, coach Mark Giesing's squad is burdened with expectations. The secret is out. "We actually like it the other way, so we can sneak up on people," explained Campbell. "We're used to doing it that way. Added Rossi, "No one…
