New Year's Eve 2012 Family-Friendly Events in St. Louis

Check out these ways to ring in the new year together as a family.

New Year's Eve Walk Hike Columbia Bottom Conservation Area on New Year's Eve from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Appropriate for kids ages 10 and older. Families will discover the sounds of the night and will spend a few minutes at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers before heading back. Reservations are required and open Dec. 15, call 314-877-6014 to reserve. Noontime New Year Celebration with the Magic House  Ring in 2013 a little early at The Magic House. Between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. kids are invited to dance to music by Complete Music, make wish wands and noise makers and march in a noisy parade. There will be a special countdown at noon. Sunset Hills Commemorates Tornado Anniversary

Speeches and a flag unveiling marked the special day while members of the community remembered last New Year's Eve.

With blue skies overhead and the high topping 70 degrees on Dec. 31, 2011, the City of Sunset Hills commemorated a day last year when the weather was the complete opposite—Dec. 31, 2010, the day of the tornado.  Mayor Bill Nolan welcomed the crowd at the Sunset Hills Community Center, who included elected officials, community members and those afflicted by last year’s storm. “It’s not a memorial, because thank God no one was injured,” Nolan said. “And, it’s not a celebration because of the turmoil and stress and the strain that our citizens suffered because of the tornado can hardly be celebrated.” Sunset Hills citizen Jim Williams recovered an American flag after the tornado hit, cleaned it and brought it up to city hall. Missouri Vintner Makes New Year Sparkle With Sparkling Wines

Toasting 2012 begins with the wine. This year choose a Missouri sparkling wine to celebrate the New Year.

Toasting the New Year tradtionally begins with sparkling wine; universally referred to as champagne. “Everyone calls it champagne but out of respect to the French we don’t call our sparkling wine champagne,” said Chuck Dressel, owner and president of Mount Pleasant Wineries, Augusta, noting that those cellars that use the term American champagne do so only because they fall under a grandfather clause; having done so for decades.
