Rott School Could See New Life as Sunset Hills Man's Home

A current resident wants to convert the historic schoolhouse into a single family home--though it will require creating a 'minor subdivision' with two additional homes.

A Sunset Hills man is hoping to convert the former Rott School/Judevine Center for Autism into a single-family home. Anthony Garavaglia purchased 9455 Rott Rd., for $275,000 a year and a half ago, he said. During Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting, Garavaglia shared his plans to complete a historic renovation on the building. The school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and he has received preliminary approval for historic tax credits to restore the school as a single-family residence. Tuesday Garavaglia sought board approval to rezone the property so he can divide the green space on its south half into two smaller lots. I was a student at Rott and it hurts to see it in the condition that it's in. I was at the meeting Tuesday night and understand Mr. Morris' concerns, but this is a much better option than how it sits now. Good luck Mr. Garavaglia in the development and in your new home! PHOTOS: Holiday Inn Route 66-Themed Renovations in Progress

New owners mean plenty of changes for the Sunset Hills hotel--including possible event collaborations with adjoined restaurant Mile 277.

While ownership of the Sunset Hills Holiday Inn officially changed hands last week, renovations to convert the 'Viking' into a Route 66 destination have already begun.  The hotel is expected to finish its conversion to Holiday Inn Route 66 by spring 2013, sales manager Jana Wilkey said.  New carpeting and wallpaper have already been installed in some hallways, and a renovation on the lobby bar is almost complete. Work is in progress on the grand ballroom, which is waiting for new light fixtures, Wilkey said. A new entrance and upgrades to individual rooms are slated to begin in mid-January, she added.  The general manager of the adjoining Mile 277 believes the hotel's renovation will have positive effects on business.
