Kimberly Bordeaux and neighbors are encouraging residents to attend discussion on Gateway House of Prayer's request for the old Mehlville firehouse on Nov. 20.
submitted by Sunset Hills resident Kimberly Bordeaux: As many of you know, the Gateway House of Prayer is proposing what they call a "rectory" across the street from my house on Sappington Barracks Road in Sunset Hills. Last month, the aldermen asked that they try to work with neighbors to come up with a plan that the would address concerns from myself and my neighbors. Unfortunately, this has not happened. The church has provided clarity around the proposed use of what they are calling a "rectory." The church feels the limit would be 16 people, a few of which would be permanent residents and the rest would be staying around six months each. My neighbors and I are very concerned about this number of transient people across the street …

Read the letter from Gateway House of Prayer's owners to residents addressing their plans for the old Mehlville firehouse.
Dear Sunset Hills residents, We, at the Gateway House of Prayer, would like to address some concerns that are circulating regarding our recent purchase of the Mehlville firehouse on the corner of Lindbergh and Sappington. We have petitioned the city of Sunset Hills to allow us to use this property as a rectory to house our ministerial staff and those training to be ministers or missionaries. Established in 2003, we are primarily a prayer ministry that serves the city of St. Louis. Christians from various congregations, denominations and generations gather throughout the week to pray together for our city and nation. We pray for the families of St. Louis, the youth, the churches and pastors, those serving in education, government, …

Sunset Hills aldermen asked Gateway House of Prayer to speak with neighbors about their intention to house staff and 'clergy in training' in the old firehouse at Lindbergh Boulevard and Sappington Barracks Road.
Neighbors who spoke against a request by a Sunset Hills ministry to renovate Mehlville Fire Protection District’s former firehouse and use it as a living quarters for its staff would like to see more rigid guidelines set for the project if approved by aldermen. Gateway House of Prayer (GHOP), located at 4646 Lindbergh Blvd., purchased MFPD’s old House 3 in August. Pastor Jeff Riddering and his wife, Tammy, would like to use the facility to house some of its full-time and temporary staff. Riddering said he believe the majority of the occupants will be clergy staff, but also some ‘clergy in training,’ who would participate in the prayer ministry’s six-month internships. Some participants live in the St. Louis area and commute to the ministry…

One Sunset Hills resident would like the opportunity to let neighbors know about Gateway House of Prayer’s plan to renovate the former Mehlville firehouse before aldermen vote on the church's request.
[Editor's note: The following letter was sent to aldermen Tuesday morning. Tonight's items related to this topic are scheduled for both public hearing and first reading. One request will add rectories to the list of conditional uses in that zoning district. The second is a request by Gateway House of Prayer for a conditional use permit to convert the their new property into a rectory.] Dear Aldermen & Alderwomen of Sunset Hills, I am writing you to present the case of the residents from my neighborhood. While myself and others do plan to speak tonight, I wanted to give you time to better consider our case by sending this now. When we first heard that our former firehouse (at 11625 Sappington Barracks) was likely to become a rectory, we …

Sunset Hills neighbors.. are opposing a firehouse because they are afraid of Christian ministers in training being "transients." Are you kidding me? What planet are you guys from? How much crime normally pops up around church expansions?   more ›
