Sunset Hills and Crestwood are contrasting communities with a bright future ahead.
This past week I covered for the Sunset Hills-Crestwood Patch site while its editor, Alyssa Stahr, was on a very-well deserved vacation. Having covered Town and Country, Kirkwood and Webster Groves Patch sites before, I felt confident I could cover Sunset Hills and Crestwood swiftly, but then the realization hit me that I knew absolutely nothing about these two Southern St. Louis County municipalities. After a week of doing my best to bring you relevant news about Sunset Hills and Crestwood, I feel I leave with a desire to follow up on both of these cities. City Administrator Karl Kestler says in a report that the full effects of the Sears and Barnes & Noble’s closures will be felt later on the year.
According to a report by Karl Kestler, Crestwood’s city administrator, April 2012 sales tax revenues of $575,637 were minus 9.8 percent, or $62,663 less than the $638,300 projected for the month. Kestler, however, adds in his report that for the combined first four months of 2012, sales tax revenues were up by $57,494, or 2.6 percent. Comparing 2012 results to the same four-month period of 2011, sales tax receipts are up $89,745, or up by 4.2 percent. In his report, Kestler notes that the numbers do not reflect the full effect of the closure of Barnes and Noble, which closed on Dec. 31 of last year, or the pending closure of Sears. The office interior design company will relocate to Sunset Hills.
In a move that most saw coming, Nolan Office Interiors will relocate to 12955 Gravois in Sunset Hills after almost 2 years at its Crestwood Court location. The interior design business, which specializes in office design and planning, was at its Hampton location for 28 years. Sunset Hills Mayor Bill Nolan and business owner found that running back and forth between his duties in Sunset Hills and the business on Hampton proved to be too much. “When I was elected mayor, I was running to Hampton, running to City Hall, then back to Hampton and then back home to Sunset Hills,” Nolan said. “When the lease came up we opted not to renew our lease on Hampton.” After searching for the right location in Sunset Hills with no luck, he found the perfect…
