What Makes a True St. Louisan

St. Louis Magazine released its list of “101 Things Every St. Louisan Must Do,” which includes a handful of South County experiences. What’s on your personal list?

St. Louis Magazine’s “101 Things Every St. Louisan Must Do” isn’t for tourists. The magazine attempts to distinguish the difference between a St. Louis resident and a true St. Louisan… and provides a handy checklist of quintessential experiences should you feel you haven’t been living life in the Lou to the fullest. Some items are more obvious than others—like skipping work to attend Opening Day at Busch Stadium, or taking a brewery tour. The list includes several experiences that are unique to South County and its surrounding areas: Download their checklist in PDF form! Patch wants to know what experiences you consider 'required' as a St. Louisan! Tell us in the comments.

Several St. Louis residents have began using the home product as a tool against potential attackers, according to a KSDK report.

If you thought it was more effective than mace or pepper spray, would you take to carrying around a can of bug spray to defend yourself? Several St. Louis-area residents have begun doing just that, and their preferred poison is wasp spray, KSDK reports. South County woman Carol Dickinson started carrying spray in her car over a month ago, according to the report.  St. Louis County Police told KSDK that use of these sprays is in violation of a federal law. Watch the full report on KSDK. The Resist Attack Foundation is a non-profit devoted to women's self-protection--but they're going to stick to giving out free cans of pepper spray. "If you've gotten an email telling you to buy wasp spray for self defense, think twice," James Shaw advises …

The rumors that wasp spray is a safe alternative form of self defense are untrue. Wasp spray is untested, less effective, and illegal to use on humans. False claims argue that wasp spray can be used at a greater distance than pepper spray, but both are capable of shooting up to 25 feet away. Wasp spray should never be used a substitute for pepper spray. This video explains why you should never …   more ›

South County Woman Indicted on Murder Charge in Grandmother's Stomping Death

Rachel Armstrong told St. Louis County Police she tried to beat a demon out of the elderly woman.

A South County woman, who police say killed her grandmother by stomping on the elderly woman, was indicted for second-degree murder and first-degree elder abuse. A St. Louis County grand jury handed down the decision Wednesday to hold her over for trial.  Rachel Armstrong, 37, of the 10000 block of Golf Crest in South County’s Sappington area, told St. Louis County Police she threw down her 92-year-old grandmother and stomped on her Nov. 12 because she believed she was a demon. The elderly woman suffered eight broken ribs and two broken arms. She died Dec. 2 as a result of her injuries, St. Louis County Police said. Armstrong is being held in St. Louis County jail.
