St. Louis area police and school administrators are taking security measures in schools to the next level, even to the point of perhaps conducting training for teachers about how to disarm intruders and negotiate with shooters who invade schools. St. Louis County Police Department officers and members of the Safe Schools Partnership met Thursday morning at the Rockwood School District Administrative Annex in Eureka to continue discussions about how to bolster future safety in schools. Serious crime in areas protected by St. Louis County Police Department officers has decreased in 2012, dropping to its lowest level since 1969. The total population served directly by county police is more than 410,000. Index crime statistics comparing 2012 to 2011 in the municipalities served by county officers, as well as unincorporated St. Louis County, show an overall reduction of 8.7 percent. St. Louis County Police Department officers will join Drug Enforcement Administration officials in collecting and destroying potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs this Saturday.
A fifth annual, national drug take-back day will be held Saturday (Sept. 29) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with St. Louis County Police Department officers again partnering with Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) officials to execute this initiative locally. Organizers said the overall goal is to prevent unused prescription medication from becoming available for abuse, and to keep unused prescription medication out of the nation's water supply. Americans participating in DEA’s four previous Take-Back Days turned in nearly 1.6 million pounds—almost 774 tons—of prescription drugs, most recently at almost 5,700 sites operated by nearly 4,300 of the DEA’s local law enforcement partners. No traffic fatalities, assaults or property damage crimes were reported to the St. Louis County Police Department related to the 2012 “Ride of the Century” annual motorcycle activities.
When the Streetfighterz motorcycle group—known for doing stunts will traveling on highways—came to St. Louis for its annual Ride of the Century, hundreds of bikers from across the country rolled into town on Saturday. Missouri Department of Transportation officials and area police officers stepped up patrols, and drivers took pictures of the ride at various points. In fact, the Missouri Highway Patrol used road blocks to stop hundreds of the group's bikers from traveling on certain highways over the weekend. As many as 1,700 motorcycle riders were estimated to be convening in St. Louis for this event. Crime has steadily been dropping here in Missouri and especially in St. Louis County since both the Carried Concealed Bill was passed and Chief Fitch was appointed. We should credit it to smart police work and less potential victims on the streets.   more ›
