Sunset Hills resident Al Moore's revised plan for the Paraclete includes a library and exhibit space. Neighbors still want more specific information on its impact to Tapawingo residents.
Nearly 20 individuals spoke during open comment after hearing a re-tooled plan for the Moore Cultural Center during Wednesday night's planning and zoning commission meeting, which is now being pitched as a community library. While several neighbors to the former Paraclete property said they found the new proposal encouraging, they asked planning commission members to table a decision until next month so all residents can discuss the revised project. “We don’t believe there’s enough information that’s been shared. It’s an eleventh-hour compromise,” said Manors of Tapawingo resident Don Hagen. “Additional details should be filed with the city in writing so the concerned citizens have time to properly consider what these details are.” In …

The granddaughter of Sunset Hills' historian Joyce Franklin is quickly following in her footsteps.
Most people can’t say that their lineage is traced back to George Washington or the Egyptians, but Julie Mroz can say that this is true. The granddaughter of Joyce Franklin, Sunset Hills Historical Society president, Mroz has been involved with genealogy her entire life in Sunset Hills. She was president of the Children of American Colonists, and now that she is older she is now involved in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Currently having their lineage traced back to the Magna Carta, Franklin and Mroz are working to trace further to the Egyptian pharaohs. “My grandmother is huge into genealogy, so she got me involved when I was younger,” Mroz said. “We are actually related to George Washington and no one believed me when I was …

Nine World War II veterans received hand made quilts and plaques at Monday night's meeting.
Two years ago Sunset Hills Historical Society President Joyce Franklin was contacted by a lady who had recently bought a quilting machine. She wanted to quilt with a purpose. Franklin knew exactly what that purpose should be—honoring Sunset Hills’ World War II veterans. “We got recycled brand fabric for nothing, and I’ve given out 150 quilts for the past two years to World War II veterans,” Franklin said. Franklin started with giving female veterans, and at Monday’s Historical Society meeting, nine more quilts were given out to male vets. John Judd, district director from Senator Jim Lembke’s office, was present to hand out plaques to each of the recipients. “I am very pleased and proud to be here tonight to honor the veterans of World War…
