Revised Dog Park Proposal Strikes Compromise, Makes Room for Pups and Kids

Neighbors who felt a proposed dog park would replace playing children can breathe a sigh of relief--Sunset Hills will present an altered proposal that allows a current ball diamond to stay.

The City of Sunset Hills is altering a plan for a proposed dog park on the Sunset Hills-Crestwood border based on vocal neighbors who want to see playing children remain on the lot.

The park's proposed location on Eddie & Park Road is behind Truman Middle School, which is currently home to a baseball diamond and backstop. The City of Sunset Hills is approved for a $220,000 St. Louis County Municipal Parks Grant to create a dog park on the 4-acre site that would serve both Sunset Hills and Crestwood residents.

The proposal reserved half of the property for the dog park, with a shelter for owners. The other half, to be built in a future phase, would include walking trails and a picnic shelter.

Opponents told the Board of Aldermen they'd rather keep the ball field, and therefore the children, on the property. Their petition efforts drew the eye of FOX2's "You Paid for It," as well as the support of Aldermen Tom Musich

The board took resident feedback to heart. Alderman Dee Baebler forwarded a copy of an altered proposal to Patch on Friday afternoon. The park plan retains the ball field, instead nixing walking trails and shelter space. Dogs will still have plenty of room for play.

"The citizens voiced concerns and we are working hard to find compromises
that will satisfy all sides," Baebler said via e-mail.

Because the plan is altered, it will have to be approved as a new plan through the city's planning and zoning commission and Board of Aldermen, she said.
